Create Browser Logs

Introduction

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for retrieving log files from the browser for troubleshooting purposes.

Chrome Dev Tools

The chrome dev tools are a feature of the chrome browser which is available for every chrome installation. Other browsers, like Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge provide the same feature, so this guide can be used for those also.

  1. Press F12 to open the dev tools and switch to the Console tab

  2. Make sure the option Preserve log is checked, to ensure the log is not cleared if you reload the page.

  3. Switch to the Network tab and also check Preserve log

  4. Use the application while keeping the dev tools open until the error or unexpected behavior occurs.

  5. If the logs are filling up while the issue has not yet been observed, feel free to clear the logs by clicking on the clear button

    which is available on the Console as well as the Network tab. This will help keeping the logs small.

  6. As soon you observe the unwanted or unexpected behavor, go ahead and export both logs.

  7. On the Console tab, right click into the console space and select Save as... then save the log file to a location where you can find it later.

  8. For the Network tab, there is an export button on the top right. Click it and save the .har (HTTP Archive) file to a location where you can find it later.

  9. Take both files, the console log (.log) and the network log (.har) and send it to support@layer2solutions.com for further analysis.
